What is a Shadowbox?

A shadowbox, in its simplest form, is a deep frame, usually more than 1" deep, than can contain 1 or more art pieces. It is a way to display anything from paper art to three dimensional objects or any combination of these. Projects using depth as a design element generally require a deeper frame.

When designing a shadowbox, you need to decide what to include, if anything, with the main art piece. Sometimes more items, help to tell the story of the art piece better. Other times, a simple elegant design is all that is required to distinguish the art. Designing a shadowbox takes a little time and thought - these projects usually have a lot of sentiment built in and taking your time will make them even more special.

Some examples of what can be included in your shadowbox are:

  • photos and documents

  • clothing and jewelry

  • tickets and passes

  • awards and medals

  • household items - such as spoons, toys, etc.

  • sports memorabilia

  • baby items

  • family keepsakes

  • business advertising items

  • hobby collections
